What is the best way to label inventory shelves?

For racking that is several levels high, “man-down” labels are affixed to the rack upright and contain the barcodes and human readable for each of the levels above and are generally color coded as to the level (level 1 red, level 2 green, etc.).  Location labels are still affixed to the rack crossbeams at each location but the man-down label allows the forklift driver to scan the location down at his level and not to have to go up to the level or use long distance scanning.
